We are finally all set up. We have 3 brahma hens about 7 weeks old. We (Husband built, I assisted) built a 16×16 predator proof run that encloses the entire coop. We put in a tire dust bath. The center post has perches and a chicken swing. We planted climbing roses along the exterior. The chickens seem very happy. 😊

Your chickens are going to love that space! What lucky girls!!! Awesome job! Are you going to lock them in their coop every night?

Looks good, my concern will be with the top. A raccoon will go right over that even with the barb wire. You might be very cautious and on the lookout for them. I had one climb our fence in the back corners. Then locked them up at night. They found a couple of places to get in and we stopped that. I am going to put chicken wire over the top completely, thus it will not only discourage coons but also the golden eagle that has been eying them in the daylight.

Thank you for your input. I was hoping the barbed wire would keep out racoons and possums. Its unbelievable that they can go right through that. Maybe we will have to go with chicken wire.

We have a very large pen, but when we put one run on the corner where the coon got in (and took at least 2 of my chickens) that discouraged it for a couple of days then it decided to go to the opposite corner. it went over the fence and still got a couple of my chickens. I then figured out locking them up. We had a couple of spots where they were getting in ( a spot about 2-2/2 inches wide. It got in and killed one of my buff Orpington but could get her out the same way. So keep an eye open for any spots about 2” and bigger that a coon can go through.

Barbed wire and concertina wire is more to deter humans and than anything else.
Chicken wire can be chewed thru by coons.
Use the same wire as on your run walls on top of the run.
