Coop Sanitizing

We are being relocated from New York to Colorado in a few weeks. The moving company said they will move my coop, but it must be completely cleaned and sanitized. Is there something that gets the poop off the roosting bars / ramp, etc easier than just rubbing. Like some kind of product that will loosen it up? And what would I use to "Sanitize" it? Thanks!

I would rent a pressure washer and start with detergent and finish with bleach water.

x2. You can start by soaking pieces that will fit into something that will hold enough water to cover them first.

Thank you! I have a pressure washer so that should be pretty easy then. I know I have tried to hose it off, and um, well, that didn't work so well. LOL

1. Scrape off excess material.
2. Soak for 15 minutes in mixture of 1 quart lukewarm water, one-half teaspoon liquid hand dishwashing detergent and one tablespoon ammonia.
3. Rub gently from back to loosen stain.
4. Soak another 15 minutes in above mixture.

You can also try and enzyme cleaner..... soak the coop in it and then pressure wash. Also, be careful when using a pressure washer... use a mask AND it can easily strip painting and stains.

If you bleach the coop that should be fine just air dry it. You can alway get a can of killZ paint and rough coat the floor. It’s an anti mold paint. That’s if you want

How complex are your (their) roosts? maybe you could just remove the poopy parts and put more in when you get to CO. That would simplify things. Especially if you own a pick-up, you could 'truck' the roosting bars out there yourself!

My floors stay pretty clean because I keep lots of shavings down. It's mainly the roosting bars and the ramp going into the coop. Oh, and on the outside on top of the nesting boxes. That one is going to be tough because it is painted and I don't want to ruin the paint. Although the coop did come with a can of paint for touch ups. I think I will start wiping and soaking the outside now. There are just a few spots. Then just try to keep that up daily so it's not a problem when it comes time to clean it for the move. Good idea about removing the roosting bars. We are driving our motor home there and pulling a flat bed auto trailer. (The only 2 things the relocation company doesn't pay for). So we will have room on the trailer. Frankly, I thought of hauling the coop there myself anyway, because I am going to need it as soon as we get there. My chickens will be in dog crates in the motorhome with us for the 2 travel days. Going to want to get them out of there asap. The thing is, we don't even have our house there yet! Still looking. Hoping to buy one with a barn and chicken coop already there!

Welcome! Make sure you have any paperwork and testing done on your chickens in time, so there won't be any issues with them. Different states may have different rules!
Cleaning the coop; if you can, that's great. Pressure wash and use a detergent.
