Coop sitting on dirt getting damp from all the rain!!!

Just wanted to say thanks for all the suggestions for keeping my girls dry in the raining weather. We raised the coop on blocks and added a 2 inch thick piece of wall insulation that is insect proof, mildew proof and waterproof. It is enviromentally friendly also. We poured 6 bags of sand down and added stall dry to it. Then put the pine shavings over the sand. We also bought the clear tarp and put it around 3 sides of the coop for wind and rain protection. The girls have been dry and happy during all the wind and rain storms we have been having lately. The ground stays dry underneath them. They are even able to do their dust baths now. I guess being a first time chicken mom you live and learn. The coop has become a continuing project for my hubby and me. Thanks again, I don't know what I would do without this forum.

I just had a gutter added to my new coop because of the rain creeping in from the sides. It stopped the puddling.

What type of all purpose sand did you use? I can only find Quikrete brand of all purpose sand, but not sure if that would work?

I just buy play sand from Home Depot. It has been a few years now since we modified and raised the coop off the ground. It stays perfectly dry even in the Pacific NW winters. We have since put on a new roof with an overhang to keep the rain from dripping in the sides. Works great. I don't need the tarp around the coop anymore.

Pull up the woodchips, put down an inch or two of gravel, followed by some landscaping cloth, and then replace the woodchips. You'll get good drainage (which something impermeable won't give you) and won't have any wicking issues like you're currently having.
