Coop size for free-range birds

Some poultry houses use multiple levels to increase capacity. The article I linked to showed a picture of one. I know that I'm required by one store to have a minimum floor space of two square feet per hen. No height limits were mentioned.

I think the REAL concensus is: BUILD IT AS BIG AS YOU CAN AFFORD! Because you will ALWAYS end up with more chickens than you originally intended.
 
BYC chickens 101 says 2-3 feet, if they are just using it for sleeping and safety, I don't think 4 sq feet is necessary, just my opinion.
