Coop Size Question

I'll mention that a lot of building materials come in 4' and 8' dimensions. You could probably build a 4' x 6' for practically the same cost and work as a 4' x 5'. A 4' x 8' will cost you a bit more.

Yup, if the larger size utilizes the natural sizing that lumber comes, ie, 4x8 feet, then it can be the same price as something smaller, but oddly dimensioned. If you just cut off a pile of pieces, the larger coop that could have been, is just laying in a kindling heap.

This is exactly the reason that my coop (and so many others) are 4x8 -- it's efficient. Besides, once the urge for chicken math hits, holding at 5 is going to be tough.

Hehehe... guess I should have clicked over to page 2... Great minds think alike. Ditto, Fred!

Hi and welcome! I feel I can help you a bit, we have six hens and we have a 6x6 coop with an attached run that is 6x15. We have 3 Barred Rocks and 3 EE's. We also live in western Washington, so fairly similar weather. I personally wouldn't go smaller then 6x6 with 6 heavy breed hens, it looks big enough until you see them all standing in it with there food and water and nest boxes, then it becomes very small. Especially when the weather is unfavorable and they don't want to go outside for days. My opinion would be less hens or a bigger coop. And believe me when they talk about chicken math, it is completely true. We have only had our chickens for 10 months or so and already we are trying to talk my hubby into a bigger coop and more chickens! They are so much fun! Best of luck, you are already ahead of the game by asking these questions before you have those cute little faces staring at you! Way to go!

Thank you! This is the nicest forum I have ever been on.... Great people, Great advice.... So I have changed my plans to 4 X 6 coop and a 7 X 12 run for 5 or 6 hens. Plus afternoons free ranging in my 1/4 acre backyard. Right in the middle of town. I talked to my 2 next door neighbors and they seem delighted - a box of free eggs once in a while to buy them off probably wont hurt. I called the city and they said I can have as many hens as I want, just no roosters...

My wife and friends think I'm crazy, they are even mocking me... LOL
