Hey guys, I am a advanced beginner (such a thing?) with chickens. Currently, I have 3 full grown hens (1 Austleorp and 2 RI Reds) in a coop that is about 3 feet by 3 feet square with a 3 foot by 1 foot nest box attachment. I am adding 5 sexlinks to the mix in about 3 months and am looking for a replacement/additional coop. The original coop will still be used but I want something much bigger so that they can all sleep together if they want.

***Important: the coop is used only for sleeping.**** my girls truly free range during the day with over an acre of open and wooded space at their disposal. I am not concerned about run space (I can add or build what I need for the one to two hours they manage to get up before I do in the summer). How big does the actual floor space need to be? If we go by 4 square per bird that would be 8x8 right? Or am I miscalculating?

Again, please keep in mind this is for sleeping only. They go in at dusk (when they are ready) and come out at sunrise or shortly after (Have to be at work by six).

Any help or advice is appreciated.
