For someone who hasn't built much you are doig a great job. Looks wonderful. You will have some happy girls. And as far as wanting only 8 that will change.
Where in Georgia are you located? I'm in Augusta and I agree that it's been beautiful weather to work on the coop. I'm off work this week and have been working on ours. Trying to get most of it enclosed before the weekend as thunderstorms are predicted here for Saturday.
I just wanted to say that coop project aside, your backyard is gorgeous! I"m hoping to get to that point too. Back to chickens, very resourceful it looks like its coming along great!
Worked on it a lot this past weekend. Funny how you have a list of "to do" items, but everything takes twice as long to actually do in real life! Oh well... just keep on trucking!
My coop.....
Got the external nest box done, lid built and attached and lock added:
Clean out doors closed:
Clean out doors open:
Spent Sunday applying 3 layers of paint. Semi-gloss exterior paint. Since I'm using a ton of old re-cycled wood from my shed, it REALLY absorbed the paint.. hence 3 coats. Hopefully it will be worth it down the road for easier maintenance:
Looking thru the window above the nest box on a side wall:
Tons of ventilation for these hot Georgia days. If they get cold during the winter I plan to add panels around the top ventilation that can be opened / closed as needed:
And after working on my coop all weekend, still more to do... my favorite thing??
Looking at my coop and admiring my first big project with this in my hand!
The inside is done. I'm probably going to go ahead and move the girls inside. I can always paint the outside later, but I need a break for a day or so and I'm ready to get the girls out of the sunroom.
Still gotta build the run...hopefully by this weekend.
All the roosts and ladders are moveable, nothing permanently attached. I wanted to get an idea of who uses what, plus I wanted them to be movable for easy cleaning. Both chick ladders are hinged to the roost bars so that I can lift them up and out of the way to clean the bedding / floor. The pop door and clean out door both have removable lips to hold in the shavings.
