Coop Temps in the summer??????

BIG difference between your summers and ours , BUT even BIGGER difference between YOUR winters and ours .

We have very mild winters which I could live with ALL year long . You said you don't see HOW we do it here , feeling is mutal , I have NO IDEA how anyone would live and have to SHOVEL their way out of their driveway for 3 - 5 months a year .

So , there is PRO'S and CON'S everywhere .

We hit a big high yesterday - we went up to 106, and inside the coop it was 110
I have THREE broody's in there so was very worried, I've been making ice this last week and yesterday dumped 8 trays of ice and put a few frozen bottles of water in there.

I been putting empty butter containers with water in the freezer . IF temps get any worse , I can always POP out ice and drop into their 5 gallon container of water .

fortunately , we are NOT raising chickens to breed . ONLY for eggs for our personal use and to sell to friends /neighbors , ETC.

I will NOT sit back and watch a broody hen possiblily dehydrate for nothing .

Was told to DUNK broody hens in bucket with ICE water and that will break the broody cycle ... I almost LOST one HEN from her sitting on a nest for 21 days PLUS with hardly eating or drinking . SO pitiful

I also put ice in the waterers and hang frozen water bottles in front of the fan, frozen treats I hope, also make them feel better. ie. mixed vegetables and frozen chopped cukes.

Well I want my broody's to hatch eggs. I'm not a BREEDER either.

If my hens don't get off the nest, I will feed and water them, but lucky for me they're not that stupid, they do get off the nest, I've seen them off for up to an HOUR when the coop temp is so high.

If someone KNOWS they have a broody and don't help out with offering food and water - well then the dead or sick broody is on them! THAT is PITIFUL!

I am sure alot of people in her e know that Louisiana is KNOWN to be MEAT /RICE/ & Gravy eaters ....

Well , my chickens LOVE the rice also . Infact, I cook them big pots of rice like 3 times a week and CHILL the rice and they GO NUTS .

I give chilled because of the heat .

Winter I will be serving them GRITS and OATMEAL ... WARM of course . Should be happy treats for them .

What is a Broody Hen?

I've seen this reference several times, but have not put 2+2 to figure the answer yet.

Its when hens want to sit on a nest and hatch eggs . 21 days plus . I DO NOT want baby chicks , so I remove any and all eggs and I try and get her OUT of this cycle . This is my 2nd hen to go thru this broody cycle this summer .
During this broody cycle , they just SET on the NEST and hardly eat or drink at all . They would die from deydration .

In the temps we have here in Louisiana , a HEN would DIE FAST from not properly eating and drinking .

For those of us who DO want chicks a Broody is so easy. I do check on my broody's a couple of times a day, and take water to them. Its been VERY hot here (Up to 110 yesterday) So far so good, I give them bread soaked in water as well, its an easy way to get them to EAT and get moisture.
My broody's do get off the nest, at the least once a day, my bantam got off one day for at LEAST an hour - the coop temp was 98 or around there that day, and she went off to scratch around under the apple trees - the eggs were fine, and she came back feeling nice and refreshed!
