This is a good idea if you don't want your pen latch to freeze
I use clear green house roofing and put the eve over the coop porch so the birds get more sunlight in winter

[/quote here is the coop it's attachéd to. I bothered to insulate it so I can winter the young birds in it later i'll use it for Pekins (setters)

All this came in handy with the recent sub zero storm
