Ok, we got our first coop! We have 6 silkies. Right now I BELIEVE that three are roos and three are hens. We're gonna need some more ladies! I'm really wanting to just focus on having one or two breeds of chicken. We have small chickens cuz we have small people around here and silkies... docile, dumb and lovable... you get it!

Where do I start? What breed will get along with silkies? The polish ones are ADORABLE!!!! I'm gonna need to get more hens... so where can I buy bantam-size pullet chicks??? I probably already have too many roosters ... The silkies are all 2-4 months old and have been raised together so they are getting along great, for now. It's tempting to run to TSC and get a bunch of their bantam chicks, but I'm afraid of ending up with even MORE roosters, so that's kinda out of the question. I would like to order chicks online if I can... need some advice from you chicken vets!

Welcome to BYC.

Where, in general, are you? Climate matters, especially when it comes to housing.

Speaking of housing,

The Usual Guidelines
For each adult, standard-sized hen you need:
  • 4 square feet in the coop (.37 square meters)
  • 10 square feet in the run (.93 square meters),
  • 1 linear foot of roost (.3 meters),
  • 1/4 of a nest box,
  • And 1 square foot (.09 square meters) of permanent, 24/7/365 ventilation, preferably located over the birds' heads when they're sitting on the roost.
Bantams are often considered to need half the space of a large-fowl chicken but some people say that certain bantams are so active that they need the same space. :)

It's usually advised that people new to chickens don't try to keep any males until they have experience with hens alone. If you can rehome your boys and replace them with girls you'll probably be much happier with your first chicken experience. :)
