I want to build a new coop for my chickens this year. We are using an old wooden playhouse that my dad played in when he was little but it is not good with insulation and the wood is rotting. My parents do not want to spend a lot of money on the chickens, so I need to make a new coop. I live in Northern Maine, the winters are really cold and the summers are really hot, so it needs insulation and air filtration. We have big chickens and bantams.
I will also be building my coop out of pallets and I plan to have two areas in the coop that are fenced from each other, one for the chickens and one for new chickens and broody hens. I plan to add a run for the new chicken so that they can go outside and not get harassed by the other chickens. I also want to add nesting boxes (15 or so), perches and those stair-like perches.
Can anyone help, please? Tips are very much appreciated. Coop designs are even more appreciated. I have never built anything before, besides two wood cravings at school, but I really need to do this and coops that are sold are stores are stupidly overpriced (basically $150 for a 4 hen spaced coop that doesn't even fit the bare minimum of leg space for two hens. Am I not the only that doesn't get upset about these prices?).
