I am new to chickens, none yet. I will be building a coop and big run for them in the next month or so. The best shady place in our yard is under a pepper tree. I see that this question has been asked on another thread, but it has mixed answers. Since this is the Southern California section of the forum, I am hoping someone has info on if this is not a good place for my future babies. Thank you for any help, Kim

Welcome to BYC, the "peppercorns"(not a true peppercorn) are toxic to poultry and other animals so I wouldn't put the coop under the tree.

I have pepper trees with pink peppercorns. My chickens LOVE them. I have heard in large quantities they will cause upset stomachs in HUMANS if we eat too many, but I have had absolutely no problems with my chickens eating hundreds and hundreds of the peppercorns and leaves from the branches.
