We have three windows in our coop. Two on the south facing side opposite the roost and nesting boxes and one on the west opposite the human door into the coop.
When building our coop, framing the windows, we nailed 1/2" hardware cloth to the frame on both sides of the 2" x 4" so we have a double layer of hardware cloth. The inside layer is under the plywood interior wall and the outside layer is underneath the barnboard siding.
We also put in sliding plexiglass windows. Which we can open/close as needed with a long broom handle from the human door to the coop for the west side window. The rails for the plexiglass we got from our local hardware store. You know the kind of store, the type that has all the unusual stuff, real local place.
Here is a picture:
We leave the windows open at night.
Hope it helps.
