I have a pretty shed at my new home that I had planned on converting into a chicken coop. It’s 16’3” X 10’3” so it’s way big enough.
I want a couple of pygmy goats too.
My question is, can you wall the inside into 2 halves and have goats on one side and chickens on the other? Separate doors and runs of course.
Is this a thing?

Goats are VERY good at escape. Also, I have heard of pigmy goats managing to smash themselves through tiny chicken pop doors so that they could eat the chicken feed.

And yes, free access to chicken feed will kill the goats.

So.... you need bigger goats that can not, under any circumstances, smush themselves through a chicken pop door... or fully segregate.

So.. I should have said... of course you could split the shed in 2 and have chickens on one side and goats in the other with a service alley in the middle.

That would be nice.

I just meant to make clear that goats are extraordinarily good at escape, so all goat fence must be insanely high quality.

I would segregate them, but they would be in the same shed separated by a wall, albeit a strong wall. i just wanted to know if either of them would know the other was right through the wall and would it make them nervous.
Their homes would be in kind of the same area anyhow. I’m still learning on these forums how to make the separation solid, although there would be an outdoor common area along with their own outdoor areas.

I heard that you can as long as the chickens can’t roost above the goats, as the poop could give them salmonella? Read that in a book, so not sure that it’s true. Makes sense though.

I know very little about the needs of goats, but I presume that, like chickens, ventilation and predator-protection are critical.

Gambrel roofs are notoriously difficult to ventilate well, but top-hinged windows will go a long way to provide draft-free airflow. :)
I didn’t even know I had a gambrel roof.
There’s another article in the making!
Is that roof too much for a newbie?
I could always make it a She Shed ….. with a fountain ….

I have goats and chickens in the same building. It absolutely can be done.

As @Alaskan has said, goats are VERY good at getting into places they shouldn't. and getting out of places where they should stay. Choosing Pigmies actually makes things harder, not easier, as the areas they can get into are that much smaller.

Of my three goats, two can get thru a rather small chicken door - the third can't due solely to the width of his horns. I'll get you measurements. Best guess, the goats are around 55# and 85-90#, respectively. The one that can't make it in is about 135#

/edit

The opening is 9 INCHES wide by 12 INCHES tall. My two smallest goats must weigh less than I think they do - entirely possible, I've not tried to pick either up lately. A three year old mixed dam, and a one year old mix buck, by that small dam. Let's call it 45# and 65-70#? I'd feel much better about those estimates, in retrospect.

Wow. I’m glad I found this forum.
first-hand experience instead of the 6 books I have that all contradict each other.
when you say same building, can they see each other or are they totally walled off?
