Hey all!

I lost my first chicken yesterday when my husband let the two out to free range. Apparently a smallish hawk killed one and tried to fly away with it when my husband ran outside. The hawk couldn't carry my roo and flew off.

My chickens were undercover of some big mesquite trees which apparently mean nothing to this hawk. :(

My corgi LOVES the chickens and when he's outside he guards and slightly tries to heard them for me. He is quite proud. Lol

My question is. If I work with him so I trust him not to nip the chickens will his presence keeps the hawks away so my chickens can free range?

Or will they still attack?

Any suggestions for hawks?

Thanks in advance!!

His name is Goggles and he's a hard worker with good drive. But NOT prey oriented. He does agility with me and always wants to please.
He also seems just enough interested in the chickens that he may eventually get bored of watching them.

He should be effective against hawk. Key is for him to respond to chicken alarm calls. Dogs that previously miss-treated chickens have advantage in that regard. Dog may benefit from your encouragement when chickens riled by predator. Also let dog out at night when gets excited as he may be responding to distressed chickens or detect predator directly.
