I live in Yakima, WA and we started a backyard flock a couple of years ago for eggs - it ruined my enjoyment of going out to breakfast because I can't stand store-bought eggs now, but the chickens are a delight!
We have two well summers, two Americanas, a black Orpington and another crazy chick with feathers on her feet ( I call her DQ for drama queen). We just purchased 6 buff Orpington chicks to supplement our egg production and introduce some new "blood" to the group. We don't have a rooster so nobody gets to sit a clutch.
We converted an old children's playhouse for our coop and built a run around it. Other than one bad incident with some neighbor's dogs (bad for the dogs, not our chickens!) we've been relatively carefree for health, predation and feeding issues. We let the girls out to forage when the weather is good but there was a period of time this winter when they refused to even come out of their coop!
I grew up on a farm so the chickens are basically utility livestock but I do have to admit to having named a few and we are definitely entertained by the varied personalities.
