Yesterday afternoon one of my 7 month old hens started showing signs of illness! The feathers around her vent were caked from diarrhea and now her poop her poop had become almost completely water...very little matter! I washed her up and blew her feathers dry, she was such a trooper and didn't complain at all, but I'm sure that was partly due to the fact that she wasn't feeling well! Today I saw her drink some water, but her crop feels completely empty and she's very listless, tail feathers down, head tucked in, feathers ruffled. I've decided to go ahead and treat for coccidiosis unless someone has a better idea of what could be going on! She is usually extremely active! I've also been think about treating my whole flock for internal parasites, just not sure what to use! They have a nice size coop, an enclosed run attached to the coop and a fenced in free range area of 110'x50'! So there is no overcrowding!

Thank you so much for your help and time! Rene'

Here is a video of my flock coming to greet me yesterday morning, she was in there with the rest of them, I'm also sharing this to show the area where they spend the majority of their time!

Has your 7 month old ever laid eggs? Can you look at her lower abdomen to see if it is enlarged or more full than others? What are rhey eating? Do you put granite grit for them out in a separate container for them to take freely and help their gizzards grind up food? I think treating with the maximum 2 tsp per gallon of Corid for 5-7 days would be a good idea. Worming with Valbazen or SafeGuard Liquid Goat Wormer at some point would also be good. She also might benefit from an antibiotics if she has a reproductive infection. Fish Mox is sometimes found in feed stores or online. Dosage is 125-250 mg twice a day for 7-10 days.

Thank you so much! Yes she lays eggs, in fact she laid an egg yesterday! I examined her abdomen yesterday and today and did not feel any swelling! They have grit readily available! I have them on Purina layer crumbles and they also get fresh fruit from the garden and a treat of cracked corn...my husband was afraid that he had given them to much fruit the day before and that's why she had diarrhea, but today she seemed to be much worse! I do have little better news, I saw her eat just a small amount of feed, but it was not much! She also pooped and it had a little more substance to it, looked like it was possibly grass and partially digested corn, but it still contained a lot of water!

I will get her started with the Corid right away, I just ordered the Fish Mox and will get an order in for the worming medicine!

Thank you again for your help! I truly appreciate your time!

Here she is in her little hospital cage! I set her up in our garage! I have paper towels in there so that I can monitor her droppings!

Two more questions @Eggcessive! What will the dose be for the Valbazen and should we discard any eggs from the flock while they are being treated? Thank you!
Valbazen dosage is 1/2 ml given orally and repeated in 10 days. Do no use eggs for up to 14 days after treatment. I would offer some chopped scrambled egg, and cut out the scratch and fruit for the time being. A tablespoonful of plain yogurt mixed in food 2-3 days a week would give some probiotics.

Thank you once again!
I actually just cooked her an egg & she is enjoying it...she has also been drinking the Corid water! I will get some yogurt & add that to her diet! I think she is doing better just by the fact that she isn't having to compete with everyone else!

I think Pearl is showing some improvement! I was moving her back and forth from the little roost to make sure she would drink some water, which she did, then she would just stand there and after a bit I would place her back on the roost so she could rest! She now seems to be moving back and forth by herself and I saw her preening her feathers. I know it's to early to tell, but I'm hopeful!
