Corn mix in a kidney?

We're two years into chicken keeping, and dispatched a 4yr old hen yesterday

. Being our first time, we checked her innards for any internal problems,
to see if everything was in good shape, no parasites, etc. Everything looked very healthy, but her kidneys were large and rounded
rather than two globes attached in the middle. Cut open, there was actual feed, still whole, in her kidney! How could undigested food get into the kidney?
She also had a load of fat on her back and laced around her intestines. Does this mean we are feeding the flock too well/much? They get 1/2c layers pellets
each/day (which they don't like) and a couple of cups of corn mix if/when they've finished the pellets (15 chickens). They also get vegetable table scraps, chopped cabbage,
oyster shells, kelp, and grit and have a large run to exercise in all day. Experienced keepers- any enlightenment? Many thanks.

Anatomically that would be impossible. I believe what you are seeing is a calcification (a kidney stone) that is tinted yellow from the urobilin.

Agree. As far as being fat- cut back on their corn treats a bit if you are concerned. I have yet to see an obese hen, but I also rarely feed mine corn and treats (fruits and vegetables) are reserved for strictly winter consumption.

Yes - it was the gizzard, as pictured. I always thought that bit was a kidney - wrong.
So obviously it would have grain in it, being digested. Many thanks for your suggestions.

Sorry. I can understand your confusion, now. Don't feel bad, I once mistook the testes for the kidneys when I first started processing birds.
