Instead of putting my brooder in the basement where it has a cold concrete floor and not much natural light, I had the bright idea to put it in the plastic high tunnel green house instead where it is very warm and has plenty of light during the day. Now that I have 50 chicks in there I am wondering about the extra work of monitoring the temperature by opening and closing doors for ventilation, turning brooder lamps on and off and excessive moisture causing lung problems. They are in the 18" tall 4'x 4' brooder box to keep drafts off of them and have two lamps that I turn on when needed.

Does anyone have any actual experience with this situation and can tell me pros and cons?

Where are you? I'm in zone 4. I know that my chicks would be toasted on a sunny day in my cattle panel high tunnel. I am still brooding in my 50-55 degree basement. I put an old mattress pad on floor sandwiched between several shower curtains to insulate the floor under the brooder. Worked like a charm except for all the dust. Can't wait to get them outside.

Western NC, zone 6. I made a mistake doing that and spent some time this afternoon moving the whole operation into the basement. Seemed like a good idea at the time until I spent the whole day trying to regulate the temperature.
On a really hot day, I would have had 50 roasted chickens.
