In the Brooder
Our Cornish crosses were accidents. We thought we were getting two layers. We are first-time chicken owners. Our Cornish are about 4 months old. The rooster is HUGE. Although I do not have the stomach to raise chickens for meat, my husband has no problem. He's quite the hunter-gatherer. Lol
We've noticed the rooster attacking our RIR hens, to the point where my husband had to physically remove him because he was clenched onto her neck.
Is this an indication that the bird is miserable? (Bear with me please. I'm trying to justify the inevitable slaughter. I just want to know that it's the right thing to do at this point. We don't want to lose any hens but we also agreed (well, I did anyway) to let him live out his days as a free-loader. It just doesn't seem to be working out though. He really is becoming quite mean. And honestly, I've never seen a chicken this big. He's got to be 14 pounds. My husband will be having quite the feast because I and my three daughters refuse to eat Big Buford. Lol
Any advice as to what to do would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Alison
