I’m actaully keeping all large breeds and actually think we have left over insulation that we planned on building up in the coop(personally don’t think it’s necessary)Never used it, but mom likes the idea. They will all be large breeds and mainly cold hardy (New Hampshire’s,Easter eggers,Brahmanas, gersey giants,Buff Orpington's and Welsummers).I figured with these breeds winter won’t be a problem and I’ll be building in windows and a fan will be provided. Like always.Plus it already has a vent in the back.
My personal opinion, unless you get to minus 20 I think insulation will be over kill, even my sexlinks will cuddle up if it gets cold. I'm in the desert, but it can get down to 20 degree's here. Having to work with Mom, you might want to get a/c for them during the summer, ought to get really hot in there..lol.. mines a basic 4 x 4 & 2 x 4 frame work with osb for roof and walls put in a solid floor. 4 vent ports along with gaps where the walls meet the ceiling and 2 - 1ft x 2ft windows, which are basically cut outs covered in hardware cloth and the board is attached by hinges so that I can close them up in bad weather. as long as they aren't being cooped up in the coop for long periods of time, I don't know that I would panic over the 4 ft per bird in the coop. Until I got the new coop built, mine lived in a 10 x 10 and did just fine.. their run at the time was pretty much a 10 x 10 as well.
