Im not sure if one of my chickens has cocci but has had some intestinal shedding going on they are 5wks old. IS it safe to give them corrid if they really dont have cocci?? Im just worried she is a lil fluffed up and has a lil watery eye going on. Gave them some electrolytes last night .. ANY advice would be great!

I have seen it enough to respond with coccodiostat laced water at first sign. Delayed treatment makes for longer recovery and increased risk of death loss. If money not overly tight, take fecal sample to vet to test for cocci.

When I put my young birds in a high risk situation for cocci exposure they are fed a medicated feed. The medicated feed is not as strong as the laced water but slows the infection enough to allow bird's immune system to keep up and ultimately control it.

The use of Corid laced water and medicated feed does seem to slow growth a bit but OK for me to control losses.

Coccidia are most problematic in a brooder or when ground is wet for extended periods of time. To control brooder infections I make considerable effort to avoid bringing in contaminated materials from outside. With free-range chicks and juveniles, I try to keep them separate from concentrations of penned adults that constantly produce cocci spores in abundance.

Some lines of birds are more resistant than others. My American Games have the greatest trouble with cocci while my strain of American Dominiques appear immune.
