I did see your original post and commented on it then(see I told ya,--- short term memory). They are quite lovely birds, please feel free to send them south for the winter!

ANNA, I really couldnt say for sure.... Perhaps temperature? Though most coturnix arent bothered by it that much it can affect them when it comes to laying and egg production rates. Other than that all i can think is maybe its a genetic thing with that color? I really havent heard of environment affecting lay rates... Not sure where else we can look on this 1, same care as the white who's laying like mad??? You can try adding suppliments--- vitmins minerals oyster shell, but keep in mind that coturnix love sameness! As in : same food, same box, same light, same mates, etc.... What type of light are you using? beleive it or not individual hens can be quite picky about this.... i have 1 hen laying like mad and the girls next to her wont give up a single egg despite the exact same conditions---- doesnt always make sense but some are finicky about the type and strength of light...

Have you tried researching the silvers? This may be something that pops up in that genetic pool..

I am thinking she may just be too obese to lay. This hen is huge. Quailzilla in my books.

As for light and temperature. My house is always warm so I doubt she is too cold, too hot I could believe at times if I forget to turn down the woodstove(+40C has happened, which is like 102F or something i think). As for light, I would have to take my overhead light apart to check(one of those glass encased things which are screwed into the ceiling with 3 bulbs in it) I think there are 25 watt bulbs in there, not sure...

At least i am not the only stumped one.

The breeder the line comes from has not noted any difference in laying with the colour.

couldn't say if it works for coturnix because mine are little egg-machines, but if my chickens are reluctant to come back into lay after a moult I give a little linseed in their feed, seems to help
