Hi

I just noticed your new. I miss several things with the mobile sit. So if I haven't said it welcome to Quailville & congrats on the hatch.

I just got 4 six week old Jumbo Coturnix last night. 1 male, 3 female. So far today, i've collected 5 eggs from them! I'm using an 18% all stock feed, so how much oyster shell should be added a day?

18%is pretty low. They may stop laying. You need game bird feed that is 22% or I feed 28% starter. Use oyster shell by choice. Just keep a full dish in the cage.

You must have timed that just right to get two free eggs. ;)

Someone said the 28% feed will cause jumbo coturnix to get so big they'll injure themselves. Ever have any experience with that? I was feeding all of mine the 28% gamebird starter then started getting worried after the comments.

No. 28% is all I've ever been able to find around here & it is hard enough to get now. The retailers have quit selling it & the only place left close by is Southern States. I have to go with medicated now since that is the only choice left.

I used to offer corn & even tried to mix it into the feed to richen the eggs. I love chicken eggs when they are given corn. But it didn't seem to do the same thing for the quail. The eggs looked & tasted the same. It wasn't worth the extra work to grind the corn to save a couple of bucks ether & them math to get the feed mixed right is another consideration. So I just give 28%or of the bag.

Also. I've never had them get any bigger then the breeders I got them from said they would get. They grow out at the speed they are supposed to & everything goes as normal. I've read from two people on here that to high of protein will cause liver damage & shorten their life. I have never seen a source for this or had birds get to a age that this was seen. It must take longer then I rotated my birds out.

Meyers carries a 27% I believe. I'll have to get some Monday when I go back. Till then, is there anything I can supplement? I keep dried shrimp, beef heart and such for my Discus. Will those be ok as snacks to raise protein til then?
