Wow . . . can I ask a very personal question of you folks?

How much did your coops cost? Because here's the thing . . . I eventually decided on getting the Garden Coop's design for a coop because it's just what we need and it's fairly customizable. The whole thing is about 10x7 and 8' high, and we decided (like we've seen others do on the Garden Coop's website) to lop off 1/3rd of it which would make it 6 and a half square (and still 8' high).

I have gone to various lumber yards and so on around the city to find the materials that we need (based on the materials list the plan gave us) and my estimate of somewhere around $350 (maybe closer to $400) seems fairly accurate, even if we have to buy everything new (which we aren't going to have to do because I've been finding some lovely brand-new scrap lumber via Craigslist here and there, got all the cinder blocks for free, and I'm sure we will continue to find recycled stuff!).

Problem is, my brother, who is a professional carpenter and refinisher and who is a nationally recognized shipwright, took one look at the plans we bought from The Garden Coop and asked us what our budget was.

When I said '$350' he said 'Three hundred?' and I said 'Yeah, why?' and he told me that in his expert opinion, the coop plans for the Garden Coup would cost . . . wait for it . . .

FIVE THOUSAND DOLLARS.

Um, yeah. And he wasn't kidding. Now, I know there's a lot of lumber involved and hardware and so on, but surely, $5000 seems a bit excessive for a 6x6x8 chicken coop!

He also said that we didn't need plans at all and that we were basically building a box within a box . . . yeah . . . but *I* have never built anything in 3 dimensions (in theatre, we only build one side of a wall as a set piece . . . ) and I *like* plans. So sue me.

Is my estimate really that off? It's not really going to cost $5k for this coop, will it?

Well... There's your professional opinion. I'd ask if he's ever worked in academia, based on that assessment and...having worked in academia.

No, he's wrong. Frankly, you must have misunderstood or he doesn't know what he's talking about. I have about as much material and time into my coop construction and it cost me about $600. Just price out the material and you'll see. Relax.

ChooksChick -- no, he's never been the intellectual type. Your post gave me a good laugh, though

Got two dear friends working on their PhD's and yeah, some of their stories . . . .

what type of wood is he planning for? African Zebra wood?

We built our coop out of a wooden shipping crate from someones HUGE tv. It is 4' x 2' x 4'. It works wonderfully for us and it was free! We added about $60 in hardware and screening. With you finding supplies on Craigslist, you'll keep the cost WAY down.

Woah! Don't brothers give their brothers a deal?! Or some free services? Wow! I bought my coop from Craigslist and I couldn't be happier. It's an 8 X 12 bldg, listed as a chicken coop/small animal barn. The man I got it from just didn't want it anymore. It was 8 years old, real solid and has a 4X8 room for feed and an 8 X 8 room for the chickens. Chicken doors, closeable windows, a man door, shingled roof. I'm delighted and my husband was thrilled because he didn't have to build it. It cost me $650 which included delivery.

I'm sure if he's a master carpenter he can probably charge what he wants, but you ARE his brother.......

I have right at $300 invested in mine, including $100 for a 150' roll of 6' chicken wire. My biggest expense was roughly $140 for plywood. I scavanged scrap wood from work and a generous uncle donated 10 12' 2x4's & enough 2x6's for the base. A co-worker had 2 bundles of shingles that he gave me.

See my BYC page....our coop *not insulated* (and the run) cost about $600 total...we built it ourselves. See also our 8x10 playhouse (seen towards the end of my page) it is fully insulated, drywalled AND has electricty and some double hung windows & raingutters and we spent about $2,500 building it ourselves. $5,000.....sight unseen......sounds absurd, completely unnecessary.
