Hi! In March two dogs jumped my fence. They killed 12 of my chickens. Animal Control asked me to go to court as a witness. This was the second time these dogs killed. They killed goats earlier this year. For court, animal control, asked me to provide a list of my chickens and what it would cost to replace them. I’m having a hard time finding prices for laying hens and roos. I’m hoping someone here can give me an idea of what they would cost.

Hey. Here is my list.

Australorp 5 years laying hen

Appenzeller Spitzhauben 4 years laying hen

Turken 3 years laying hen

I don't know on what the cost would be, but I am so sorry for your loss :hugs

I’m so so sorry, that’s horrible.

One thing you might be able to do to find a cost, is to price out the cost of baby chicks of that breed from online, and then estimate the amount of feed to get them to laying age (maybe 6 months?) plus the cost of buying eggs up until that point. Not exactly the same, but that’s what it would cost you to start over & probably a lot easier & safer than finding & buying laying hens, especially since you’ll know the chicks are biosecure.

I too, am sorry for such a loss. When figuring out cost add cost of feed, if you sell eggs loss of income….how long they likely would have laid. WE all know it is so much more than $ and cents but you should add for your trauma as well as theirs. Find an article about chickens as therapy pets…bring it with you. People relied on their pets during Covid and we all know how calming and therapeutic our flocks are. The first thing I do when I get home is rush out there for some chicken energy….I hope those owners have to pay ALOT….

Bresse farms sells started pullets. So do many others. They cost much more but they lay soon after you get them and you won't have to wait 6 months to get more eggs.Any of the larger hatcheries will sell older birds. You just have to find one that sells the same birds or similar. The younger they are the more money your birds were worth. They owe you for cost to replace the birds, repairs to the fence, lost eggs and money spent to get the hens to laying age if you get chciks instead of started layers. If you had breeding pairs they owe you for those too. :hmmnly you know the value of your flock or what it would cost to replace them.
