Hey, I am going to be getting some coturnix quail in about a week, and then in the spring, I am going to be getting california, and tennessee red quail. Are the reds a mutation of the bobwhite? Anyone have pics of the birds?

Thanks!

Kevin

Tennessee Reds are a mutation of bobwhites. Let me warn you, they are REALLY aggressive. I would keep them in their own pen
Chicks
The darker ones are the Reds

PM JJ, he is the bobwhite expert on the forum, or Randall. Robo is another one I believe?

Bobwhites in general can be nasty to each other. Just in their nature.

As chicks, red lights and not getting them too hot is the best thing I've seen about controlling picking in bobs but doesn't always work!! Tenn. Reds are worse about picking than any other breed of game birds I've seen... Trim their top beak, use the red lights, give them plenty of room, and keep them just a touch cool if they start picking and it should take care of it!

The Tennessee Red is a mutation of a bobwhite. They are very agressive. I don't have a pic on my computer, but I will get one tomorrow. They are a lot of trouble, and I would reccomend reading up on them. They are meaner than the regular bob. If you get them in the spring they will not lay until next spring. I would get them right now if you want chicks. If you hatch them in November they should be laying by late March or early April.

Are regular Bobwhite mean?
I want to put some Bobwhite in my pen with the Coturnix, do you think there is any problem?
