what age can coturnix chicks go onto 1/2''x1'' wire? I have 39 that are like 10 days old, and they poop too much, LOL. I want to have them in a cage ASAP so I can have a pull-out tray instead of them on shavings

I put mine out at about 3 1/2 weeks, which was Wednesday for us. They were a little tentative about walking on the 1/2" x 1" flooring at first (brooder box is 1/2" x 1/2" wire), but after a few days they got the hang of it. I can understand your desire to get them off of shavings though, they are definitely poop machines.

poop machines is an understatement! I think they poop more than they eat! And they eat a lot! LOL! I have 1/2x1/2 wire too - maybe I can line the cage with 1/2x1/2 until their feet are a little bigger.....

I ended up making them a 24''x36'' (x20'' high) cage made of all 1/2'' hardware cloth. I didn't think it would be sturdy enough, but once all together, it is! Now I have a pan under the cage to be able to clean it more easy and they seem to be less flighty now that they can see us all the time too!
