Coturnix in lockdown, when should I become concerned?

I dont think they would mature as fast as standared but would only be a few extra weeks like mabe 3 give or take a week. They would be perfect for you substained

I dont see why it couldnt be done. i mean they were able to selective breed standards which were about 5 ounces to get up to a pound. just keep selective breeding your biggest jumbos and im sure you could get up to the two pound range one day. itll be worth a shot :D

I know right?! It's a project I could get really into. It would combine my 2 favorite things, incubating and sustainable living! :-D

I don't think the extended maturing time would matter much. People would just have to plan accordingly. And pound for pound, birds eat far less than rabbits. Or at least compared to my colony of fatties LOL

I was reading online coturnix eat less than 2 pounds of feed to produce 1 pounds of eggs where chickens have to eat over 3 pounds of foor for every 1 pound of eggs. so right there you are saving money, and the bigger the bird is the bigger the eggs are going to be.I had a few show rabbits for awhile but never was breeding them, and dont know how much food they give after hwo long. Ohhh an i love the waythe coenosh x chickens run LOL its so funny

I've never seen a Cornish x run... I sense a youtube search coming on! I've never raised them myself. Although I recently found out that there's a high demand for them in my area so I've been tossing around the idea of raising some. If nothing else I'd have a slightly fuller freezer

Hmmm at those prices I'd choose the quail over the chickens in a typical scenario. I keep chickens for eggs and rabbits for meat. It's about 6lbs of feed on average per lb of meat for rabbits I believe. Which is a lot but I only buy alfalfa for roughage for them. And even that is only during winter when I can't provide enough greens and natural roughage from my yard. So Spring-Fall I feed them for the price of seed packets for my garden. My chickens are even cheaper because I can supplement with kitchen scraps, I save the whey from cheese making to add to their feed, mealworms (which I also raise and is free after initial setup costs of $15), all the wilted greens that my rabbits won't touch, and I sprout wheat for them (which turns 50lbs of wheat into 300lbs of feed), and I crush their eggs shells and feed them back to them for extra calcium. I also keep a big bag of black oil sunflower seeds as treats for the chickens. And I'm starting a guppy/duckweed tank. The guppies will be extra feed and protein for my birds and the duckweed will be too and will cost almost nothing to feed the guppies. And to cover the extra costs of rabbit roughage, winter feed supplements, guppy food, and all the little things in between... I sell fryer rabbits, extra eggs, and in the spring I will start offering mealworms, and red worms (from my vermicomposting system) too. I put the money in a separate little jar for out of pocket expenses for them.

Sorry, I get to talking about my little 'farm' and I ramble on endlessly

Sounds like you got it going lol. Ive always wanted a setup kind of like that where everything supports itself. my dream is to find a big property and raise all my food and only have to really pay for property taxes and such. Grow all the food for animals have every thing self SUSTAINED. kinds want to go back in time a few years when everyone had atleast a few chickens in their backyards .Its ok im fine with the rambling no need to apologize :D

Nobody ever gets my username until I explain it

Idk about having it going on lol it's a work in progress. I've got a nice size yard but no acreage (YET!) so there's a lot I haven't started on so far. That's pretty much my dream as well. Living in the middle of nowhere and supporting myself completely off what I grow. If it's done right there's enough of a margin for profit off certain things that if I saved all year long it would pay the property taxes and whatever else I needed. Just need to be willing to work hard, which I've never had a problem with.

I'd love to drop back in time! How cool would that be? My neighbors think I'm weird for keeping chickens in my backyard. I think they're weird for not. I can only imagine what they'd think if they knew I had the rabbits too! I keep hoping to convert my whole neighborhood to keeping livestock. I've even considered offering chicks to all of them. It's much harder to resist cute little fuzzies than adult birds if you're not a chicken convert yet. Or maybe when I get my quail up and going I can offer quail chicks... Yup I'm awful. I did notice that a few are starting to garden a little bit which is a huge improvement. The neighbors on one side can see right into my kitchen and yard from their windows and spend a lot of time creeping me out watching everything I do. I get that I have a weird lifestyle, by most standards, but they could at least be subtle about it! Anyway, they planted a fall garden and I was so impressed that I've held off on my plans to pay the biggest, hairiest dude I can find to walk around in a speedo for a week or two in my kitchen and yard.

Yeah we have half an acre but theres also 4 family members houses on them :/ so i dont thave the space for big projects either. Im going to see just how much profit there is in quail first. i know theres a few restaurants around that would buy the eggs and Im sure theres atleast 1 person willing to buy them as pets or for meat. if it doesnt workount in my town then off to the internet. maybe they will provide me with a few extra dollars to buy them some more "friends".

They were probably trying to find out what your evil plan was to takeover the city with livestock :p I dont thinkanyone can turn down a quail chick. and not one that FREE.
Oh god if you hire the guy to walk around in a speedo you got to put a camera up and try to capture their reaction for the firstime they are looking through the window and see a huge hairy guy scratchig his chest hair and eating pizza or something

Wow. I've got a little over a 1/2 acre lot. I thought that was close quarters lol I've never lived in the suburbs before though and I'm not adjusting very gracefully. It's kind of a running joke that my neighbors probably think that the clampetts live next door. My grandfather stopped by last week and told me that my 'redneck is showing'. I forgot to sweep up the hay in my driveway after unloading a couple bales.

4 houses on a 1/2 acre really doesn't leave much room at all. Are you going to keep your quail indoors then? Or did you find a nook outside for them? Nobody minds the idea of the roos crowing? If I get too nosey just ignore my questions.

I was thinking one(hopefully excessively hairy) butt cheek hanging out of the speedo and a beer can with a lot of loud belching going on when he's in the yard, maybe some crass comments, raunchy jokes... etc.

And of course there must be video! They don't seem to have any kind of schedule and I wouldn't want to miss the reactions! Priceless I'm willing to bet. Absolutely priceless!

Its not that bad right now theres enough space for my 14 chckens to roam and theres enough room for my qual. is a family lot so they wont care about the noise cause they all have chickens too :D I moved here for a elderly family member, and will be moving back to land thats about an acre and a quarter in like 5 months an i hope i can get my goats and burrows back when i move back home :/ wasnt easy giving them up but they are with a friend so i might be able to get them back again :D

Make sure he sun bathes facing their window and make him go over and be like " Hey can you put some sun screen on my back for me want to make sure i dont get a sunburn gotta keep my body banging, oh and excuse the hair." all in a really deep voice. id be supprised if they did it for him

You have goats?? Jealous.... I want a milk animal but haven't really decided which route to go. Obviously a large milk cow is out of the question :p

I love it! A lawn chair with a cooler of beer and some binoculars staring right at their house would be fun too. To bad it's not summer cuz the dripping sweat would really add to the whole scenario
