Oh and your golden quail. are thoes the only quail you have and were you planning to breed them or just keep them as pets? i read that goldens have a lethal gene and breeding a golden to a golden could result into loosing up 75% of your hatches. most people breed a golden to a wild type and they say they get mostly goldens

Literally laughed hysterically when I read that! I know just the person to pull that off and make it as gross as is humanly possible

They're my first and only quail so far. I was planning to breed them. I've never read that about the lethal gene. Thank you for the information. I would've been pulling my hair out trying to figure out why I have consistently lower hatches. Well it looks like I need more quail! What a terrible prospect

I wouldn't mind if I didn't get mostly goldens out of a hatch. As long as a few maintained the golden gene I'd be happy. I just thought it was really pretty so that's the color I went with.

Make sure to catch it ALL on camera

I read it in This thread. its down in the breeding genetics section. sorry its said to lose 25% of hatch. its right after most of the pictures

Hmmm interesting. Actually the whole thing was interesting. Lots of good info in there. I'd never ran across a list of which colors are dominant, recessive, etc. Very cool

I'm a serial sticky note ignorer. I just recently read one of the ones from the chicken forums lol but only because someone linked to it from a thread. I have a habit of reading up on one specific question and then kind of rabbit trailing from there. This is a great site to do that. I'm definitely one of those 'blah blah blah blah SQUIRREL!' people

LOL I waited until they were about 5 or 6 days in I think. but mine all had the dark spotting. It's the only reason I waited so long. It makes them hard to see anything until they're almost ready for lockdown. It's not impossible like all the places I read saying so. You just have to turn them and look between the spots. Although I only threw away ones I was dead certain hadn't developed at all or had cracks in them. If I wasn't sure, it stayed. I would have left the cracked ones too if I'd known about the nail polish trick at the time.

Changed your mind about candling huh?
