i was recently given six coturnix quail eggs to try, so I could make sure I liked the taste before raising quail. As I cracked them to make fried eggs, I saw about half of them had yolks that were pretty much solid instead of liquidy like a chicken egg. It was like they were dried out. I threw those ones out.

Is it usual to have quail eggs do that? It would make quail pretty inefficient if half their eggs were not usable :)

(The ones that were normal were very good. I'm hoping this is atypical, perhaps caused by the eggs' small size and the 100 degree temperatures we've been having.)

I have noticed that with my painted quail, they dry out fairly quickly in the heat and rattle when you shake them, it does make them good decorative and prank eggs. :p They don't lay the eggs that way.

Never had one like that yet from my quails but our highest temp has been 34.5 degrees Celsius here in the uk. Maybe the temp started cooking them in the shells I would make sure ur collecting them quickly and keep them cool before u eat them :)

They will definantly dry out if they are left in the direct sunlight for a few hours .. sounds like they need to shade the run up a bit ... or maybe they were old eggs that had a couple hours of heat before they were collected .
