I have recently rescued 2 coturnix quails in my yard this evening with the help of my 6 1/2 yr old grandson who I always helping me with my chickens we already have. I have no experience with quails and I saved them to keep them save as we live in the country and we have 2 mean pit bulls that live behind us and I knew they wouldn’t survive...My question is how & what do I feed them, I brought them in for right no and gave them starter feed and water, I can’t tell how old they are...any help would be so greatly appreciated.

It looks like you have a male and a female there. I can't tell for sure, but it looks like there's still a bit of yellow chick fuzz around the hen's head, so I would guess they're around 5 weeks old. If I'm seeing things, then I don't know the age, other than "adult".

Since they are fully or at least mostly grown, a standard layer feed will be fine for them. Chicks need higher protein feed (around 28%), but adults don't need as much.

You will probably end up with some problems with your boy at some point. Coturnix quail do best with 1 roo to 3-5 hens. You will either want to get him some more hens, or rehome them with someone who already has quail.

Good luck, and let us know if you have any more questions!

They look to be about 3 weeks old give or take……and look to have 1 male 1 female. Starter should be fine temporarily but if you can find an all flock or gamebird feed it would be better for them.

Thank you for your response, I’m going to see if I can find more hens for him, they were so sweet when we found them.
