Coturnix Quail

"Chinese painted quail" are button quail. They may belong to the same family as what is commonly referred to as Cortunix quail, but they aren't the same thing. I'm not sure why they have their site set up that way, it does make it confusing.

I got my eggs on ebay. I will post a link to a good mix of eggs auction right now. I should have eggs for sale from my birds in may-june.

Just keep an eye on agression levels when they are mature. I have 3 trios and I always have to make sure I put 2 hens together that like one another.... yesterday I put the wrong hens together into a breeding cage and one hen almost killed the other.
Now I have a stiched together tuxedo hen living with my cockatiels in my house.... poor girl.

They do make awesome Pets, all of mine are tame, which can be problematic if you try to clean the aviary and have those lil buggers running around inbetween your feet no matter how often you push them away with your foot(they will even give you an angry peck when you do that).
I have tuxedos, chocolates, a golden pied, a red headed golden and a normal.

I have seen some awesome colour combos at a friends house, she crossed red heads with choc tuxedos. Neatest looking bunch of birds I have ever seen.
Or red head normalXwhite, another interesting combo.

Last year I only had the Chocolates and the Tux, but now with all them other colours I am really excited when they start laying again and I can hatch some babies.
Should get interesting.

A friend of mine acctually bred what he called "charcoal" Cortunix, the body colour was similar to that of a blue chicken. Sadly he lost his breeding stock to a weasel, he hasn't sold any of his young birds of that colour, so no one else got a hand on these birds....... I was on the list for a pair. They looked really beautiful, a sport out of his tuxedos I think(well, maybe my tuxes will throw the odd blue bird, they are of his stock).
A shame tho, never seen that colour again.

Good luck with your eggs,
Anna

fancyfowl, can you share a bit about your aviary? Do you have other birds in there with your quail. I hatched 8 cortunix quail, they are 2 weeks old now and feathering out nicely. I cannot sex them yet, and they are still in the brooder. I am keeping them as pets and trying to figure out a housing arrangement. Can they all stay together in the aviary, or will I still have to use the 3 female t 1 male ratio?
There is not a whole lot of info out there on raising quail, other than meat and egg production.
Thanks
Amy

My '07 youngsters grew up together and were fine living together in the aviary, now they are a lot more agressive. My Aviary isn't very big, 2mX2mx3m. They shared it with a pair of Bobwhite quail(winter only), Doves, finches and a couple hookbills.
Now they are all in their breeding cages since they started fighting about a week ago.

I will probably put 1 pair back in the aviary, since now the bottom looks so empty with just 1 pair of Bobs.
They seem to get along well with other types of quail like Bobs and Buttons, I acctually had the male Button boss the Cortunix around.
All my Cortunix 'talk" with me, as soon as they hear/see me they start to chirp and answer every time I say something, it is just too cute. They do have a bit of a complex, they think they are the biggest birds in the world!

They throw temper tantrums like a little child (at least mine do). If I got food and don't put it down right away they will let me know how angry and impatient they are by pecking and kicking my shoes and chirping very loudly.
Mine are easy to pick up, struggle a bit but get all huffy about being touched when let go. One of my hens tends to turn around after I let her go and give me a peck on the hand, kinda like "how dare you?" "Now you've ruffled all my feather!".

A lot of personality put in a little bird.

There are a few people on here who have a great mix of the eggs. when you are ready I bet if you looked on the forums or posted for them you'd get them right away.
