Somewhere in MS
casportpony , I have one hen that has developed a loud cough. Lately, she's less active than the other birds in the pen (7 others), but other than coughing, she seems to be healthy. She usually shakes her head after coughing, and her beak opens quite frequently. Is this likely due to a respiratory illness? Thanks in advance...

Merry Christmas!

Could be a respiratory disease, maybe gapeworms, or she might have something stuck in her trachea? Do you want to try to save her?

Thank you for the quick reply, Cathy. I hope you've been having a wonderful Christmas day!

Yes, I'd like to save her if I can. Not that she's an important bird, but I'd like to know how to treat this in case one of my valuable Rhode Island Reds become affected with this. My Reds are in another pen a good distance away, uphill and generally upwind as well, but there's always that "chance"...
