Coughing?

I read some where that feather picking/eating might mean they need more protein. What are you feeding her? I'm glad her coughing went away. Have you checked for lice and mites?

I am feeding her mostly chicken grower. I gave her some mealworms this morning, partly to give extra protein, and partly because I feel bad for stressing her out. They recently ate my oregano plant, and some Brussel sprout trimmings.

When I check for lice and mites, what am I looking for?

For lice check near the vent. If she has them you will see little bugs run to hide in the feathers. For mites check her vent and also check at roosting time. Use a flash light and look around their faces for little bugs.

Well, I checked her while roosting and didn't see anything. Her skin seems normal, no redness. I got a nice scratch for my efforts. She doesn't like to be held. -sigh-
Unless she shows any other signs of illness tomorrow, I think I will return her to the flock. She was second in the pecking order, so I hope she doesn't have too much trouble rejoining the flock.
