Could a dog get a chicken through this?

I had a friend who had a hawk reach through standard chicken wire and kill several turkeys. All the hawk could reach to eat was the brains.

So I use half inch by half inch hardware cloth.

All good advise on the hardware cloth. Timing is key, so do it soon. The predator now knows where there is an easy meal and it WILL come back. So sorry for your loss. Personally, I trap pretty aggressively against nest-predators (coon/possum/weasel) So far this year I'm at 4 raccoon, 1 'possum, 1 skunk and 1 rat. They were NOT relocated, they are GONE, never to kill a chicken again. An extra benefit is that raccoon legs make good coyote bait.

Sounds more like a raccoon - they will reach in through the wire and grab a chicken.

Wrap the bottom several feet of your wire fence with hardware cloth (not chicken wire)
Sorry for multi post...

Why hardware cloth and not chicken wire?

hardware cloth is made from thicker wire, and welded at the seams instead of chicken wire which is just twisted at the joints, and has a tighter mesh. A determined, strong predator like a coon can tear through chicken wire, MUCH harder to get through 1/2" hardware cloth.
Ah, okay. Thank you!
