I bought a few chicks from the hardware store a month ago, 3 Chanteclers and 5 Buff Orpingtons. They were perhaps a week to 10 days old when I bought them. They were all sold as pullets.
I'm having my doubts about the sex of the three Chanteclers. This is my first time with this breed. They have a cushion comb, something I've never had before either. For such young docile breeds, I seem to have pretty "cocky" behavior I don't expect from such young pullet chicks especially from such docile breeds.
They came from a commercial hatchery, Hoovers Hatchery if that makes a difference.
A week or more ago, one chick's comb started to get quite pink, then another. The third's is a little pinker than it was. These chicks are about 6 weeks old. The picture doesn't show how pink their combs are but they definitely stand out. Chanteclers have cushion combs so I would expect one this age to be quite flat. The width and the pinkness of the center bird especially is what has been concerning me although the picture doesn't show how red it is.
I don't mind the odd mistake but I will be really ticked off if I get 3 cockerels instead of 3 pullets. Those are worse odds than straight run chicks!
Thoughts?
