im getting 5 chicks soon from a hatchery and thought it would be fun to enter them at a small poultry fair or show. Im not expecting to win first place or anyhing, just wondering if all the chickens in shows are all top quality. Im getting some silver laced cochins which i heard is a rare variety, so do you think if they met the standard they could enter or would they just be laughed at

I think you could learn alot by entering your chickens in the show! You'd learn what to look for, and gain alot of knowledge.

I see no reason why you couldn't enter a small show just to learn and look at other people's birds. You gain a lot of knowledge just talking to other people at the shows. Cochins might not be the best choice, as they are very popular, so hatchery birds are very conspicuous compared to show stock, but for learning purposes they should be fine.

i could also enter the faverolle, light brahma, speckeled sussex, buff orpington that im getting. Which of these do you think would be best

Chicks are too young to be entered in a show. 6-8 months minimum. Entering hatchery birds is really not a good idea. Much better to simply go, look at the birds there and think about purchasing some birds from breeders. The chances of a hatchery bird actually meeting hte standard of perfection is pretty slim.

I agree... Just going you learn a TON then you get a since of whats happening and what to do. No matter what kind of bird you take the first show is going to go a little bumpy.. mine was. So I would just go and think about maybe purchasing some birds and go from there. It's better to just start off with the best then trying to constantly upgrade. Again drawing from personal expierences.
