No closer to a desert really, Rocky Mountain high plains desert, but I build things for a living, and I never put wood to dirt, unless I have to, and If I use wood poles or posts, the underground part, is treated, but still rots first, just sayin'. That's why my whole run and coup are sitting on cap block too -- well that, and being a masonry contractor means there is always plenty of left over block, brick, and stone, around for me to keep all my lumber off of the ground. I even put lumber I haven't used yet on top of dunnage even when I stack it on concrete to keep it dry. Lumber is made out of the same raw material as Bounty "The quicker picker upper" is, and you don't need a swamp to get it wet, dew will do it. If any plant will grow, even a cactus, it's because there is some moisture in the ground, and it will wick into any lumber it's in contact with.."Keep it dry"? Do you have the coop in a swamp? Just asking.
