County Fair and animal cruelty!!!

I understand the lady was not the one completly responsible for them but if I was polite enough to let her know some was unable to get to their water (which I'm sure she already knew) then maybe instead of getting snotty and saying it's not her concern, she should have made a note to tell the owner!!! My son and I both went around and tilt each ones cup so they could drink. We spent well over an hour checking each one and then the rabbits as well.

but typically, for 4H, there is someone who goes around and makes sure all of the birds have water. idk about open class, but its definately true for 4H. whether the lady that you were talking to was the person in charge of that, i don't know.

That's terrible. If the lady was there trying to actually help the animals, I don't think she would have been so rude, especially when the rooster died. There was no reason for her to snap. And if she was actually trying to do what she could for the animals, she would've been making sure they could actually get the water. It doesn't sound like she was an innocent bystander trying to help out of the kindness of her heart. Call animal control and report it. Let us know what they say!!! Hopefully they'll help

Our local fair isn't that bad, but I hated seeing the chickens this year, now that I know what they are supposed to look like! The same people bring a huge amount of birds each year, and last year I enjoyed looking at them, not realizing... This year when I saw them, I was disgusted by how straggly and dull they actually were. Last year when we were at the fair, I wasn't into chickens, so I didn't realize that they were so unkempt

They didn't even have some of the names/colors correct on the description cards!

Fortunately it's still cool when we have our fair, plus for the most part, the birds all had water. I think it's more of a case of them having too many chickens

The point is wether she was in charge of them or not.She was getting them water and DID see the conditions and did nothing about it.She could see the same as me and did NOTHING about it.That's what ticks me off. However I know for a fact when the owner of the birds put their birds in the cages and seen the dag on small cups the fair provided, they should have made sure for themselves wether or not it would have been suitable for their birds.I don't put total blame on the fair at all. It's the owners to.The owners are most to blame but sorry when I seen the lack of compassion on that womans part, it makes me think twice about showing birds at the fair. You can't spend 24/7 with your birds their so your entrusting someone like her to make sure they have water and food at ALL times. She BY PAST the ones that had cups tipped over!!

That ticks me off just hearing about it. At our 4-h fair, we all take care of each other's birds, but nobody was allowed to touch the meat birds. The meat birds were panting and pecking eachother and I did see one corpse. It was so sad. Just because they're being used for meat doesn't mean they don't have rights. They should be provided with clean food and water just like all the other pet hens!

I'm going to be hung for saying this, but:

People do not care. You must think of what THEY see when they look at a chicken. It's a bird that is made for meat and eggs. Not the snuggly-puffy birds we like to think everyone thinks of them as. The people that entered their birds into the show are taking care of them how they see fit. The woman that was watering was probably watering her OWN birds and may not have liked the owners of the other birds, was hot and tired of it and simply did not care.

It is NOT only in poultry that this happens and it won't be the last time you see it either. It's more common in the 4H and FFA area because (many of them) they simply see the birds as a food commodity, project or money.

I too, have seen birds at the fair with no food or water. I did not leave until they were all taken care of. Fortunately i was able to find a way to do this. I found one fair that has one day, under a huge tent with all the poultry. They are shown and judged and then go home. Thats the best. They also have a person at all times monitoring food and water for the birds. I wish they all were like this. The fair in my town makes you drop them off before the fair opens, and pick them up when its over. Its usually a 5 day fair and i think its just cruel to leave them in a cage 24/7 for 5 days. I hope some day chickens get equal rights
