Hi,

I'm hatching with a broody and I noticed today that one of our other hens had managed to get in and lay underneath her, the egg was thin shelled and broke underneath the broody - one of our hens is getting old & has a cold at the moment.

I noticed a few of her eggs now have some yolk on them. They're not totally covered but one has a fair amount. They also have bits of shell that seem to be glued on via the yolk. Will this affect the chicks inside? I'm guessing it blocks pores?

As far as I'm concerned the eggs reached day 21 today but none are pipping yet.

Has she let you candle them? You might want to do that. Usually when eggs get wet during incubation, they will end up usually going rotten.

I candled them when I got back from holiday and found three to be fertilised but not developing. On the fourth I thought wasn't developing there was a small chick moving its arms. I was gutted so I have tried not to mess.

I don't know the exact day the eggs were layed, so couldn't give a definite day 21.

There was a broken egg when I got back from holiday in there too, I cleaned it straight away.

I'm considering calling a halt in a couple of days & secretly swapping them for day olds from my local store to keep her happy. What do you think?

Sounds nice. I hope she can hatch them, but She would probably be happy with any chicks.
