Hello seasoned chicken raiser,
I'm hatching my first clutch of egg and found that a newly laid egg has a grey circle near the air sac (rounder end) but not exactly at the base of the egg a bit skewed like the drawing i added. It looks like a darker circle that is definitely not a yolk because after candling 14 eggs from my hens, I always find the yolk reddish when candled. This one is muted. It's also small, only around 1.5 cm in diameter, about the size of our thumb nail. Could anyone tell me what that is and if it's viable to be incubate?

Hi, and welcome to BYC!

I can't see anything odd there, but I also don't candle them before I put them in. Were these shipped eggs?

I just put them all in and candle on Day 7. You'll see if it developed or not then.

Wishing you a great hatch!

Nope it's from my own chickens, freshly laid. If you zoom out you can see a circular shape there and that got me confused

Oh I'd leave it, I have had eggs like that and actually all of them have hatched! One of my duck eggs in the incubator has an air cell skewed to the side and it had pipped. I shipped eggs from 919 kilometres away and most of those had sideways air cells and they were fine

Could just be a wonky air cell, even home raised. I hatched a quail from an egg without one, developmental defects and booboos happen. Incubating a batch of shipped quail eggs right now, the air cells float around, cool to look at but it means they got scrambled in transit, ugh! Last spring I had saddled air cells, also a sign of shipping trauma. Interestingly, I had half the normal air cell eggs not hatch and half the weird air cell eggs did, total hatch rate of 25%. The air cells are a symptom, the problem is shipping trauma, they are already scrambled, no amount of babying or setting them upright can fix that, they’ll either hatch or they won’t, at least I didn’t get expensive eggs this time. A home raised egg should have a good chance, as no shipping trauma!
