Covered nesting boxes

Just remembering that my grandparents used to have cloth " curtains " covering the front of the nesting boxes, either for privacy or darkness (?). Haven't noticed any reference to this on the forum. Anyone do this?

They seem to be unescessary, as most hens lay just fine without them.

I agree. Mine do fine without them.

I cover my nest boxes with a thick cloth (various colors) and it seems to make it more inviting for my girls to lay.

That's what I thought, but I am thinking of doing a redesign in my coop . I only have two nesting boxes for up to 6 birds but now and then do find an egg on the floor. Right now three of my birds (RIRs )give an egg/ day/ bird while the three older leghorns are only producing one egg/ day between them .

Given the option, I think they prefer the privacy, although I don't think it is necessary.
