You definitely have to cover the run- hawks and other animals will get in there and kill them! That's a really large run which is nice! I also have a large run and it is nice because your chickens will be outside pretty much all day until they go in their coop at sunset. It has been my experience that my chickens automatically go into their coop once the sun goes down even though they can stay out in their run if they wanted to since it is all connected. It is nice to cover some of the run which can shade them when it is hot outside and if you get snow - it still leaves space that is protected from snow falling. As a New Englander I have learned that once we get a lot of snow the chickens will not go out in that part of the run and I have to shovel pathways for them to walk in. The part of my run that is covered is where they stay when there is a lot of snow or rain. And if I dont feel like shoveling the larger part of the run then I am still good! Hope that helps!
