Covering Run

Hi!

On my first ever chicken run we used chicken wire across the top. At 16x32 feet, it was a bit tricky and needs to be fixed in places as we speak. Interested in hearing these ideas since I will soon be repairing my top. I was thinking of the deer netting as well, but there is that cost. I am now thinking about rolls of window screen? I am thinking that with such a tight meshing in window screen it may also serve slightly as shade for the girls.

Was there a certain vendor on Ebay? What did you pay, if you don't mind me asking? We found it on Cutler for 138$ plus shipping which will be another 47$ Thank You Michele

OK, here is what I got, but they didn't have anything on ebay right now.

Compared to everything else I could find, it seemed to be a good deal even though I eventually had to get 2 of them. I'll try to go out and take some pics today and show some of the ways we had to tie it up. Good luck!

Seems I missed adding the info first asked for in my previous post!! We string filament line across the top of the run and string dvd's/cd's here and there. With the hawks around here...we never lost one to a hawk within the run. Hawks are deterred by the flashing of the silver cd's. I learned this from our moderator, Speckled Hen, years ago. Very cheap and you don't need many.

we covered ours with the poultry netting and it does the trick. what my grandparents use to do was use tobacco twine which is like string they ran it back and fourth from end to end and left a few inches between the strings. you may say this is crazy a hawk could still get in there. and yes your right he may can wiggle his way through but he cant get back out and if you have roosters in the run they will kill him with their spurs once he is on the ground and cant get back out ive seen it hapen with my own eyes

but its whatever is easiest for you and best for your budget and good for the chickens. most of all do what you can to keep them safe so you can enjoy them

we use chicken wire and then cover with a heavy tarp. This is temporary. We had call Ducks
and they did not use the run often.

Our Chickens get their exercise in the run in Winter. We are going to put on a shed roof and use heavy plastic on the sides....come Spring Project. Regards, Aria

you have to be extremely careful with putting a tarp over the run u should make sure you cut a hole in it for drainage if not the weight of the water on it will sag it in the middle thus pulling down the sides of your run. learned this the hard way lol

We had welded wire as a cover, but decided to put a steel corrugated roof to keep the rain and snow out.

Have our run covered by netting to keep predators out. Tried to cover with tarp for winter and found that the run is too large and snow load would bring the whole thing down due to the weight. Used my two rain barrels, which are only stored during the winter, as additional shelter in run. Filled barrels with strawn and my rooster thinks they are his personal condos.....

He loves to hang out in there because he is too large to fit under coop with the girls, but won't go inside coop since he can't keep on eye on them.

Ebay is where we got ours

If you look on "view my BYC page", you can see we have it installed on all our big runs...40'x35' and a 25' x 40' with no hawk issues...and let me tell you, we do got'em here!

The netting is easy to install and I just used plastic "zip ties" to hold it spot. I attached it once at the top of the wire and then again 12" down on the side for a reinforcement, then cut the excess off.

I've even had tree limbs fall on the top of the netting without it breaking...good stuff!
