Cow breed question

Last April I bought my first calf at an auction. Was told he was an angus calf. I bottle raised him, and he’s grown up to be a great looking bull so far. Well today I was petting him and he has rounded nubs starting to grow. I thought angus cows were polled? Any ideas what he could be crossed with if he’s not pure angus? I mean, he’s almost 1 and just getting nubs? They are only about an inch long if that. He’s solid black (dark dark black), with 1 white hoof. I never questioned him being angus until today 🤷🏼‍♀️

A picture would help. If he is getting horns and he has one white hoof, he is not straight Angus. My guess is that he is most likely crossed with a Holstein. If you got him for beef he will still make a nice beef steer. Bear in mind that the dairy crosses are larger framed and a little slower to mature than the pure Angus. Meaning you should keep him longer and let him get bigger so he will finish out properly.

Just a comment. Some dairymen breed their Holstein heifers to an Angus bull for calving ease. Holstein Angus cross calves frequently showed up at the sale barn.

I hope the OP has castrated this calf. Bottle raised bulls can become very dangerous when they mature. Even yearlings have been known to kill people. Just something to keep in mind.

Agreed 100%. Bottle raised bulls are not a matter of if you get hurt but when.
