The best thing for me, honestly, is that I got a really good hammock.

That sounds lovely! We have a big chicken tractor that I put in a spot between the barn and the house so there is lots of activity in that area which I think helps but time will tell. Hopefully my little cockerel grows to be big and strong and behaves himself long enough to keep the rooster train rolling haha

This is interesting. I wonder if country cats fare better because the ones around me sure seem to. They aren’t exactly domesticated indoor cats but I think they are rescues that have been dropped off (there is a backstory but I’m not sure it matters). Having adopted feral cats I can safely say they are so much more skittish than your average house cat and I wonder if that attributes to the kill rate.

Coyotes are opportunistic.They eat whatever they run across.I've had 2 house cats vanish after sneaking out the door. One was a young black neutered male that was blind in one eye and the other was a beautiful long haired calico we had 10 yrs.I boxed my patio in last summer and haven't lost any since.

There's nothing for coyotes to eat in the city except rats, cats and small dogs.

Raccoons? They would make a good meal. I know a couple that could have fed a pack of wolves

In theory but coons are better equipped to defend themselves than a cat. Having the option of both they'll go for the cats

That makes sense. Their little paws are vicious. We had a mama leave her kits (? Cubs?) in our car port and the little bastards hissed at me when I tried to get in my car. Fun fact: animal control considers them a pest but very few exterminators will deal with them. So that’s nice when they’re trying to eat your suburban chickens

I woke up one night to what I thought was the sound of a puppy crying in my backyard. I looked down out of my window and directly under me there was a fox with one of my cats up against the house. (This cat thinks he's Superman and has, in his career, chased deer and scaled a tree to try and capture a vulture at least twice his size).

I once saw one of my cats get into an accidental, brief skermish with a raccoon. (Some fur flew, but I took her to the vet and they couldn't find any cuts/scratches/injuries).

My yard has lots of places for a cat to run, and all of my outdoor friends did well for the 8 years before I decided to make them permanently indoor.

Just today, I heard this (not my video, but an identical sound!) coming from my woods. My chickens were out free ranging while I was mowing and I swear they all turned and looked at me, lol.

My basset hound immediately started barking and shaking his head side to side when he heard the coyotes ! He thought the sound was coming from the chicken coop because we have a baby monitor there
