Coyote Attack & Prolapsed Vent?

Since the coyote was almost successful this time, you can almost surely count on a return visit. Plan accordingly as far as your pullet security is concerned. Good high strong fencing, machine gun emplacements, armed guards, etc.

Sorry you and your girl had to go through this, but hope she recovers. What you're doing for her seems appropriate. I would have done pretty much the same thing as what you're doing. I think I'd be totally P'd off at that vet though. They KNEW it was a chicken, you told them! They could have asked the question about purpose BEFORE you brought her in and ran up charges. That was BS IMHO. :rant:mad:
Remember I shortened the story...let's just say they did know I was p'off! They said there would be NO CHARGE for the visit!

As for the coyote, this is actually the second attack and third sighting. Husband has ordered a caller and decoy with lethal plans for the coyote. Fence has already been purchased but will take a while as we own 11 acres. We have been surprised at how brazen the coyote has been; we have 2 100 pound dogs that are aggressive and one is very protective of the flock. The coyote has managed to time the attacks perfectly. He showed up at 2 in the afternoon one day; he was not successful that time. He is actually entering our front yard when he attacks but there is deep woods on both sides that he is using for cover.

If you've ever looked at chicken poop, it has that white stuff in it. I believe it is calcium based. They use a lot which is why they need oyster shell or high calcium foods. Anyway, as it dries it hardens... When the coyote grabbed your girl, you can be sure that he wasn't gingerly holding her between those teeth. It applied quite a bit of pressure. Part of the reason others advised you check her over thoroughly for other punctures/injuries.

She may have some internal bruising/injuries that you can't see. Possibly a destroyed egg internally. The result is her defecation leakage that you're observing. As long as she's eating and more importantly drinking, the injuries should heal up and her stool stiffen back up.. :fl

You can fence in a decent sized area as an expanded run to protect your birds while the main fencing is being put in place. Use T-posts and cheap welded wire with a couple strands of hot wire on top to prevent jumpers and you can take it back down later if you desire.

Thank you! That has been really concerning me.
