I've seen coyotes in our neighborhood early in the morning hours but none have yet ventured into our back yard.

I'm so sorry to hear of your loss… it's hard, as they become part of the family.
On a better note, I was thinking the same thing about your writing- seriously, even in this economy, people are still looking for good reading material. And I hope the kids are OK after this eye opener of "Wild Kingdom"… my friend's kids had a similar experience but it was the neighbor's dog.

gckiddhouse, So sorry them rotten scoundrels got your girls. I live right down the road from ya, and yesterday I saw a momma coyote and FOUR pups! Crossing 24th Street at the curves between Desert Hills and Joy Ranch Rd. They are all over the place back here and I hear them around 2:30 - 3:00 in the afternoon almost every day. Sounds like at least a dozen camp out on the far end of our property out past the big wash.
