My chickens have access to an open field when they free-range.
Of course, hawks are a safety concern when they're out there in the open.
There is not much shelter in this field, but the chickens 'can' rush back to the
coop and run, should they feel the need.........
I am always concerned for their safety, but after much thought on the free-range
subject, I've decided that, for my chickens, this is a quality vs quantity issue.
And, so, they free-range.
Many of the parks around here have installed coyote 'cutout' decoys.....to keep the
ever present Canada Geese at bay................and I was wondering if these decoys might
prevent a hawk attack on my chickens? Or would they frighten my chickens as well?
Anyway, when I googled 'coyote decoys'......a 3D version popped up. It's 'quite' lifelike,
and if 'I' were a hawk, I certainly would come no where near an open field if one
of these were visible.............
here's a link.... http://www.bird-x.com/3dcoyote-p-17.html
Do you think it would work as a hawk deterant? or would it be too scary for my chickens?
(Or, would the chickens eventually get accustomed to it's presence?)
Any thoughts??
